10 Year Anniversary of Main Street in Lincoln Village
|
Ten years ago, the Lincoln Village Business Association was accepted into the Wisconsin Main Street
program, which is operated by the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. Utilizing the National Trust for
Historic Preservation’s Four-Point Approach®, LVBA has dedicated its efforts to the restoration of the
Lincoln Avenue business district; with an emphasis on preserving the architectural integrity of our buildings.
Lined with storefront board-ups and dimly lit walkways a mere decade ago; Lincoln Avenue has transformed
into the premiere commerce destination on the south side of Milwaukee once again. Although we at LVBA
are proud of our efforts to revitalize the district, it is the investments of the Lincoln Village business owner,
property owner and neighborhood consumer that ensures the district’s success. For that, we thank you!
A few of the many highlights of the Main Street program include the addition of pedestrian level harp lights
and planters along our sidewalks, the reconfiguration of the Windlake and Lincoln Avenue intersection and
dozens of the new storefronts based on architectural renderings provided by LVBA. As the data below
showcases, our commercial district has excelled in terms of business attraction, expansion and building
renovation.
Local businesses received grants directly through the LVBA office for projects such as: facades, equipment,
business planning and website development.

New "Lincoln Village" Sidewalk Receptacles
|
In partnership with contributions from LISC
Milwaukee, the Basilica of St. Josaphat and its
Foundation, LVBA installed new trash receptacles
on the east side of Lincoln Village. The new cans
replaced three City of Milwaukee standard cans at
the corner of 6th and Lincoln Avenue; with
additional cans placed at 5th Street and Lincoln
Avenue; and 6th Street and Hayes Avenue.
All told, seven new cans were placed, including
four in new locations. We would like to thank our
partners for their generous support. We will
continue fundraising efforts to expand the project
west along Lincoln Avenue.
Harris Bank Awards Grant to Lincoln Village
|
LVBA would like to thank our partners at Harris Bank for contributing
a $5,000 grant for the advancement of the Lincoln Village Main
Street program!
As part of the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewage District’s (MMSD) Flood
Management Project the concrete sides of the Kinnickinnic River have
begun to be removed. Large slabs of concrete have been removed
east of 6th Street and replaced with a new channel.
The new channel changes how the river looks and how it moves. With
the new 6th Street bridge in place and a more natural river channel,
the risk of upstream flooding should be reduced. Concrete removal
will continue west of 6th Street in the coming years to further reduce
the risk of flooding and dangerous conditions along the river.

Milwaukee Public Television personality John McGivern stopped by the
Lincoln Village office this fall to begin research for an episode of
“Around The Corner” featuring Lincoln Village. After receiving an
overview of our district, the LVBA office connected John and his crew
with local businesses and residents for what I’m sure will be a terrific
episode! A description of the series per MPTV’s website…
“In our new MPTV series, Emmy Award–winning actor John McGivern
explores what it is to live, work and play in 13 unique communities in SE
Wisconsin. He talks to employers, residents and “enjoyers” of these
neighborhoods.
What he finds is that they are all different – and all the same. In each episode, our friend and local history expert
John Gurda tells us about the past of the featured community and maps out the boundaries so you’ll know where
to go if you want to do your own exploring.”
The series is now in the editing stages. The Lincoln Village episode is tentatively scheduled for a January 2012
airtime. Be sure to check local listings and the Lincoln Village website for specific air times.
UPDATE: The Lincoln Village Episode is set to air April 12th.

We are exited to announce that the efforts of our committee have raised in excess
of $45,000 towards the restoration of the Kosciuszko Monument in the park that
bares his name. The committee, chaired by Claude Krawczyk, works on
fundraising efforts for the project; which includes networking at local events, a
booth at Polish Fest and speaking engagements.
The total renovation cost for the monument totals more than $360,000 and would
require moving the monument to an indoor facility for complete interior
rehabilitation and external laser cleaning. Filled with concrete by the County in
the 1950’s when it was moved to its current location, interior water rot and warping
is occurring at an alarming rate. To find out more about what is needed and how
you can contribute to the effort, visit the committee’s website at
www.rkmMilwaukee.org.
