In celebration of Mexican independence, the Lincoln Village Business Association organized a Cinco de Mayo
celebration. As one of the most culturally diverse neighborhoods in Wisconsin, Lincoln Village embraces its
multiculturalism in a way that most communities strive for. As the population of the neighborhood changes,
new advantages for the business district emerge.
88.9 Radio Milwaukee Neighborhood Project
|
The strength of Lincoln Village’s community and the revitalization
efforts of the LVBA will be highlighted this spring for all of metro
Milwaukee to hear. 88.9 FM, Radio Milwaukee, has selected Lincoln
Village, along with 3 other Milwaukee neighborhoods, to conduct a
series of interviews that give a snapshot to “help us understand how
diversity, innovation and creative community-building are helping to
shape the neighborhoods of Milwaukee’s future.” Lincoln Village is
honored to be selected and excited to share all that the
neighborhood has to offer with 88.9’s listeners.
As RadioMilwaukee puts it: “We want to share the tools these
neighborhoods are using for successful community-building with the
hope that more Milwaukee neighborhoods will put them to use.” Tune
in all spring to hear Lincoln Village businesses and residents share
their insight with the world:
Cardinal Capital Project Proposed For Lincoln Avenue
|
Our Space Inc, in collaboration with Cardinal Capital Management
Inc., has proposed the construction of a four-story, 30-unit, publicly
subsidized housing facility at 525 W. Lincoln Avenue. The one and
two story buildings presently on the site are occupied by Our Space,
which operates an adult mental illness rehabilitation facility.
County Sup. Peggy West hosted a meeting at Kosciuszko
Community Center on April 20th where plans were presented
followed by a spirited Q&A session.
KK River Reconstruction Project Meeting
|
The drastic flooding of the Kinnickinnic River in the last few years and the poor, sometimes dangerous,
access to the river’s banks have called for a complete redevelopment of the river just south of the Lincoln
Village Business District. The project has held two public meetings and is holding a follow-up meeting on
Wednesday, June 3rd from 5 – 7:30 pm in the gym of the Kosciuszko Community Center.
The purpose of this meeting is to have the project’s lead design firm, JJR, present what alternatives may
occur to the neighborhood adjacent to the KK River from the actions of the river redevelopment project.
The community, including local business owners, is encouraged to give feedback which will inform the
continued development of the final redesign plan. Information regarding the development, evaluation and
ongoing refinement of MMSD’s flood management alternatives will be addressed, and information regarding
MMSD’s potential property acquisition and relocation activities and benefits will be provided as well.
Please attend this meeting, become informed of local development, and share the input that will help shape
the future of our community. For more on the history of this project, visit the Sixteenth Street Community
Health Center site. Both LVBA Executive Director Neil White and Committee Coordinator Jim Tarantino serve
on the project's Technical Review Committee.

Main Street Award Winners
|
LVBA is proud to announce that two of the largest redevelopment projects in the business district in 2008
have been awarded with honors from the Milwaukee and Wisconsin Main Street Programs.
The Ben’s Cycle expansion of the Milwaukee Bicycle Company into the storefront at 1013 W. Lincoln Ave has
received the honor of “Best Façade Renovation Over $7,500” from the Wisconsin Main Street Program.
In addition, the public plaza and new patio at Tres Hermanos, 1332 W. Lincoln Ave and LVBA won Honorable
Mention for the category “Best Downtown Public Improvement Project: Beautification”. An award
shared with LVBA for this collaborative project. The Tres Hermanos project also won the “Urban Pioneer
Award” from Main Street Milwaukee, an honor that recognizes an outstanding new promotional project in a
Main Street district. And for the 2nd year in a row, LVBA Design Committee Chair Judy Ramazzini was
honored with the "Volunteer of the Year" award for her work on Quartet and the Kosciuszko Monument.
LVBA is proud to work with the many business owners working towards building a stronger business district
and will continue to promote the investment of business owners to these and other competitions.
The Milwaukee Bicycle Co. Project is also in contention for a Mayor's Design Award. Winners will be
announced shortly.
Whether it is the entrepreneurial spirit of new immigrants to
Milwaukee, the commitment from old businesses to continue doing
business in the district, or the ability of the district to stay organized
in the face of a changing economy, Lincoln Village celebrates its
diversity and the new culture that has been created here from the
sum of its parts.
On Tuesday May 5th, from 4 to 8 pm, the Lincoln Village Business
Association hosted the First Annual Cinco de Mayo celebration.
More than 100 new consumers flocked to Tres Hermanos
and other participating restaurants, including La Salsa Taqueria,
El Salvador and Fiesta Garibaldi for the event. A shuttle van took patrons from restaurant to restaurant to
check out all the great cuisine our district has to offer. The main event however was the Jalapeño Eating
Contest on the Tres Hermanos Patio. As you can imagine, there were more curious onlookers than
participants, but Andres Perez Jr. astonished patrons by finishing the required 20 jalapeños in 2:46. Eric
Cardenas finished 16 within the 3 minute time limit and Marie Piller tackled 12; finishing second and third
respectively.
The large crowds were also treated to the renowned sounds of Trio Alma Latina mariachi to compliment the
sunny day. For additional photos of the event, be sure to scroll down. LVBA would like to thank our volunteers
and sponsors who made this great event possible; including Tres Hermanos, La Mexicana Records, Stefan’s
Soccer, El Salvador Restaurant, La Salsa Taqueria, Fiesta Garibaldi, 88.9 Radio Milwaukee and LISC. LVBA
ran full page ads in the Shepherd Express for three week prior to the event, which proved successful in
drawing new cleintele to our district. We look forward to a bigger and better event in 2010.

National Publication Honors Lincoln Village On Cover
|
The National Main Street News did a cover story on both the Lincoln Village
and On Broadway (Green Bay) district in a recent publication distributed
nationally. The cover features before and after images of La Flor de Trigo
Bakery, which won honorable mention for Best Facade Renovation in the
state in 2006 The project also won Best Facade Renovation LVBA 5th
Anniversary Awards.
.
Owners Eva & Igancio Mossa purchased the boarded up property in 2005
and completely renovated it from top to bottom; mostly by themselves. Their
fine bakery has been steadily growing ever since.
Since LVBA was certified in the program, the organization has assisted in
the creation of 36 new businesses, more than 60 building renovations and
over 200 full time job equivalents. Private investment has topped more than
$8 million in Lincoln Village, accounting for more than an 8:1 ratio of private
to public investment.

LVBA offers multiple matching grant programs targeted at securing a business owner’s financial bottom line.
The Signage and Security System Matching Grant programs offered in 2008 help Lincoln Village business
owners offset these necessary capital costs. Lincoln Village is pursuing funding to support additional
matching grant programs aimed at offsetting other costs of conducting business. The match that the
Business Association provides to business owners for these grants has been funded by various sources in
the past, often on a year-to-year basis.
LVBA is committed to maintaining and expanding these services, and their continuation is conditional on
LVBA securing new grant sources. Specific funding sources that are being pursued include nonprofit and
charitable foundations, while primary consideration for long-term program support is still given to
obtaining a BID status for Lincoln Village.
Please voice your support for attaining secure funding through a BID, as cooperation is one of Lincoln
Village’s unique assets and may help the district grow in the current economy.
